There are two key elements to improving our wellness – one part is to understand which areas of life we would like to change, one part is actually doing what it takes to make the change. By taking action, and changing the behaviors that aren’t working, we can create a better, healthier life. This may be in the realm of the physical, like I discussed last time. Yet, to improve our overall health and wellness, we must also include our mental and spiritual wellbeing.

The direct line to improving your wellbeing is simple-
* Move your body
* Consume good nutrients and savor your meals
* Get adequate rest
* Keep your stress levels down
* Smile
* Do things to relax and enjoy
* Think good thoughts
* Connect with others in a meaningful way
* Better understand yourself and what’s meaningful to you

Much of improving our wellbeing involves the willingness to make changes in our lives. We fall into habitual ways of leading our daily lives, or habitual ways of thinking that leaves us feeling small. To improve our health and wellbeing, we have to be willing to get unstuck and go through some discomfort in the process of change. It is possible if you are willing to take on the challenges and the obstacles that present themselves. Stand for what is important to you!

I wonder why we have to keep working at just being good, accepting ourselves?

So what is wellness for the season for you?

As I break from my studies, I notice the intense focus it takes to prepare for certain events. Stress want to come up, in a usual automatic way, yet, I am practicing just noticing. Have you tried to do that? Just notice without the judgements, rules, shoulds.

I notice how I feel, that I have been thinking, and some worry amongst other things. There is no right or wrong.

This is called witnessing, and it can be a powerful tool.  By witnessing, we are present NOW, not living in the future or the past.  So, I practice as I go about my tasks…

What would you notice if you were to just witness your doings and thoughts?

We can determine our goals by being clear on what is important to us. By understanding our values, we can set more appropriate goals for ourselves. Instead of the generic ‘I want to lose weight’, than we can set up SMART goals around this with a higher likelihood of success.

How is this different than a New Years Resolution?  By setting up SMART goals, your can better access, in a realistic and practical way, the life you want to be leading.  When you make a New Year resolution, you are hoping for a change, wishing something better or different.
